Hikers' Lodge on the Stevenson Trail (GR70)
A stage in the heart of the deep Cévennes
Gîte du Pont de Burgen welcomes long-distance hikers on the Stevenson Trail (GR70), in Saint-Étienne-Vallée-Française, in the Cévennes.
This trail, inspired by the 1878 journey of writer Robert Louis Stevenson, crosses 4 départements from Puy-en-Velay to Alès. The GR®70 is a flagship 272 km hiking route from the southern Massif Central to the southern Cévennes, rich in breathtaking scenery across the four territories of the Velay, the Gévaudan, Mont-Lozère and the Cévennes.
If you've made it to this page, you're ready to book an unforgettable hike, whether alone, as a couple or in a group, on foot, by bike or in the company of a donkey.
Located just off the GR70, the lodge is an ideal stopover to rest after a day's walk on this magnificent Stevenson Trail, in the heart of the deep Cévennes, before reaching the Mediterranean side.

Founded over 44 years ago, the Gîte du Pont de Burgen hikers' lodge was designed for long-distance hiking in the Cévennes, and today welcomes mostly hikers on the Stevenson Trail GR70.
A well-earned break
At the start and end of the season, hikers can enjoy a warm herbal tea indoors, followed by a meal in the main room, the hearth with its large and impressive fireplace.
You'll rest in the spacious rooms of the authentic Cévenol farmhouse, snug under the duvets and blankets provided.
Hiking in fine weather lets you cool off in the nearby water and swimming spots, and enjoy a refreshing drink on the shaded terrace, before eating outdoors until nightfall.
Nights are quiet, in comfortable beds and a naturally cool house. A last stroll before bed lets you take in our reserve of starry sky, just a few steps from the house.
Our guest table offers local “made in Cévennes” produce every day, and cooking from here and elsewhere combining travel recipes with local ingredients and produce from our vegetable garden and orchards. You'll eat according to the seasons and the weather, with hearty, quality dishes.
Location on the GR70
We are located 22 km from the former Cassagnas railway station, and 24 km from Barre-des-Cévennes. The lodge is 400 metres from the GR70, and on the GR67a “Tour des Cévennes”.
Where the GR70 meets the D984 road in the valley floor (5 km after Saint-Germain-de-Calberte), turn left off the GR70 waymarking and follow the wooden “Pont de Burgen” signs, then follow the GR67a waymarking. After the Pont de Burgen bridge, it's the (only) house up on the right.
The next day, you'll reach the village of Saint-Étienne-Vallée-Française for supplies in under an hour's walk (4 km), and you'll reach Saint-Jean-du-Gard after 17 km, having crossed the Col Saint-Pierre.
